Changing image backgrounds
Having the right image backgrounds is essential for showcasing your products effectively. Whether you need a simple product with a transparent background for a product description or a scene that tells a story, Image Studio helps you quickly give your product images the backgrounds you want.
With Image Studio you can quickly remove, replace and generate image backgrounds without graphic design skills, saving you time and simplifying the process.
Removing backgroundsLink copied!
Image Studio makes it simple to remove image backgrounds to create product cut-outs with transparent backgrounds. You can use these clear and neutral images of your products on your product pages, or apply other backgrounds for different uses.
To effortlessly clear the background from an existing photo, simply use "Remove" background.
After removing an image's background, you can:
- Remove any unwanted foreground objects that are still present, using Erase foreground
- Resize and reposition the remaining foreground. See Adjusting foreground objects
Replacing backgroundsLink copied!
When you've already got a perfect foreground image but need a different background, use "Replace" background in Image Studio to quickly replace the background with a different one.
After replacing an image background, you can adjust its scale and effects to create the perfect image.
To achieve a more natural finish, apply a light blur effect to blend the foreground of an image with its new background.
Scale modeLink copied!
Image Studio's scale mode feature simplifies the process of resizing backgrounds, making it easy to create images that are perfect for any online platform. Use the various scale modes to adjust background images without losing image quality.
- Fit resizes the new background to be the same size as the original image.
- Cover uses background images at their true size and by default centers them on the canvas. Depending on the size of the background images you can use the grid to focus on different parts of them.
- Stretch resizes background images by stretching them either horizontally or vertically so the entire image is visible within the canvas
For Fit and Cover modes you can use the grid control to set a focal area for background images.
Generating backgroundsLink copied!
Save yourself the time you'd spend searching for the perfect background and use Image Studio to quickly create your own.
To generate backgrounds you give Image Studio instructions known as image prompts. The more details you include about the background images you want, the better Image Studio can produce exactly what you're looking for. Image Studio lets you generate multiple images at a time from a prompt.
Here's an example where we want to generate a new image to replace the current background.
We've written a prompt and used it to generate the type of background that we want, but the brightness of the background colors could be better.
To generate a background that looks more realistic, we've added an instruction to our prompt to specifically tell Image Studio the type of result that we want to achieve. Our regenerated background provides a more natural setting.
When generating backgrounds, the credit usage will vary based on:
- How many variants you decide to create
- The model you select
Tips for writing image promptsLink copied!
Writing effective image prompts can take a bit of practice, so here are some tips to help you get started.
Consider the scenarioLink copied!
One of the first things to consider is the setting of your background. For example, is the scene indoor or outdoor? Is it Summer or Winter? Try to visualize what you want to achieve.
Image Studio gives you a head start with these decisions by giving you parameters to help to set the scene. Use these parameters to quickly include information about context, lighting, framing and composition for your images.
Bring on the detailLink copied!
Provide as much detail as possible to help Image Studio interpret your ideas and create backgrounds that match your vision. Try to visualize what you want and include that information in your prompt.
For example, giving the simple prompt "Create a photo of a living room", will create a perfectly acceptable photo, but gives no guidance for the color of scheme or style of the room. To guide the AI to create a photo of a living room that meets a particular brief you must give detail, such as this:
Create a photograph of a living room with a minimalist scandinavian influenced aesthetic. Interior design. The room has a white color scheme with accents of black and natural wood. The scene contains a sofa that is behind an empty coffee table.
Include what's relevantLink copied!
Try to clearly describe:
What's relevant to both your product and your audience? For example, do you want your products show cased in a homely environment, a spa, an urban setting? Do you want your audience to see your products in a luxurious, romantic or minimalist setting?
What you do and don't want in the image. For example, as the backdrop for a furniture, for a realistic photo you the backdrop should reflect the furniture's style and purpose. You may have a modern sofa that you want in a minimalist living room with a rug, side table and lamp, or a garden chair that you want shown in the context of a patio with lush greenery.
Set the tone with colorLink copied!
The tone of the colors in your images can make the difference between whether the image looks good or not. If you find that your generated images have the composition that you want, but they still don't look quite right, try giving Image Studio more guidance by telling it what tone of colors you want. Some examples, of how you can get the color shades you want could be, use pastel colors, use bold, saturated colors, use natural colors.
Applying background colorsLink copied!
Instantly change the appearance of your product images by applying background colors with Image Studio's "Color fill" tool. Use different colors to highlight your products, or create a consistent, professional look with your brand's color palette. Whichever colors you use, you can adjust the transparency to whatever level you like.
Blurring backgroundsLink copied!
Make your products really stand out from their backgrounds, by applying a "Blur" effect. You can blur backgrounds from the main "Background tools" menu, and also from the Background image panel after replacing backgrounds.
Blurring backgrounds can be useful to:
- Make a product stand out by softening the background
- Ensure a product blends smoothly with its new backdrop when you replace a background image
Here we've added a light blur to help the foreground stand out.
Adjusting foregroundsLink copied!
Image Studio lets you easily resize and move images of your products, whether you want to keep the original background or use a new background.
Images with new backgroundsLink copied!
When you've used Image Studio to change an image background, you can then resize and reposition the resulting image foreground layer.
A foreground layer is created when you remove or change the image background. More about Image layers.
Here's an example where we've replaced an image's background and want to adjust the size and position of the person (foreground layer). Note, a thumbnail of the original image is displayed in the top left corner of the window. To resize or move a foreground, click on it to display the grab bars and adjust accordingly.
Here we've made the foreground larger and moved it to the right.
Images with original backgroundsLink copied!
Sometimes you may have product images that already have the perfect background, but just need the subject to be moved or resized slightly. For example, you may want to create space for overlay text that will be added when an image is used in content.
Image Studio helps you adjust product images on their original backgrounds, with the help of Repair background.
Repair background works best with photo backgrounds. If you have a single color flat background we recommend that you use color fill.
To adjust an image on its original background, you first need to remove the background and then reinstate that same background. This creates a foreground layer that you can move and resize, as shown below. More about Image layers.
The quickest way to remove and reinstate a background on a new image, is by using the blur action. Alternatively, use "Remove Background", then from the "Background" tools, select the Image tab and choose 'Original background' from the dropdown.
Adjust the foreground layer using the grab bars, as shown in the example below. In our example, adjusting the foreground has left some shadowing where the original foreground was. We'll use "Repair background" to correct this.
Clicking "Repair background" draws in the area that was left by adjusting the image.
